Children and parents have flocked to a new play area after it was officially opened (26 July) at Hampshire County Council’s Royal Victoria Country Park.

The play equipment for pre-school children includes new swings, climbing equipment, tunnels and carousel.

Councillor Andrew Gibson, the County Council’s Executive Member for Culture, Recreation and Countryside, said: “Our country parks are much loved and popular, but it’s important that we continue to provide new facilities for visitors to enjoy. The new play equipment at Royal Victoria Country Park is just one of many improvements as we invest in all our country parks to help them become more financially self-sustaining.”

Councillor Peter Edgar, Executive Member for Education, who officially opened the new play area, said: “It was fantastic to see so many families at the country park. It was clear to see the children loved the new play equipment, despite a few drops of rain.”

A number of free events also took place at the official opening including story telling, face painting and drumming.

Wider improvements are also taking place at the country park, including a £3.2m project to restore its historic chapel, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the County Council.
